Translation Memory - Part II

This week’s topic deals again with Translation Memory within English-Spanish Interpreter Professional.

Translation Memory (TM) is one of the main tools implemented in ESI Professional to assist you with the problem of polysemy, or words with multiple meanings.

With (TM) you can choose a particular meaning and its translation for any word when translating a document. Take the word “stock” as an example. If your document deals in commerce, you may need the meaning having to do with “stock in trade” or inventory, instead of the default meaning “shares = acciones”.

If your document is about cattle, stock would refer to livestock and would be translated as “ganado”. Or, dealing in gastronomy, stock would refer to broth and would be translated as “caldo” or “sustancia”

You can pre-select any one of these meanings and any one of these translations. Remember: Meanings and translations are two different things, and ESI allows you to make separate, independent selections. What’s more: You can pre-select your own translation for every different meaning. Then, if ESI automatically selects a given meaning, or if you manually select it, its corresponding translation will already be pre-selected

To pre-select a Meaning:

  1. Translate the sentence with the Interactive mode .
  2. Click on the word you want to mark with your preferences
  3. Study the different meaning (horizontal tags)
  4. Click on your selected tag, and then right-click over it, or click over .

To pre-select a Translation :

  1. Follow steps 1 to 3 above and then right-click over the Spanish translation.
  2. Repeat the process for other meanings, in case it is needed, or click over .

This process will save you hours of work when translating long documents which have many repeating words on the same subjects. ESI “remembers” your pre-selections for one session only, or for good; that’s why it’s called Translation Memory. But, the good thing is that you can change your preferences any time you like and as many times as you want.

In the future, we have plans to make ESI automatically identify the topic of your translation and thus choose the appropriate meanings for you. When this happens you will be amazed at the results, because all dictionary words in about 200 different application fields will be marked, not only your specific selections.
