How to learn a foreign language: 5 Steps

Step 1: Study from a self-study textbook

First, you need to find a good self-teacher. You can choose a self-tutorial by reviews on the Internet. The main thing is that it should have audio and keys. We advise you to take a paper version with the ability to perform tasks directly in the textbook: it is more effective.

It is necessary to trust the chosen self-tutorial and to do everything that it offers – straight in a row, without skipping anything. Listen to the audio, read texts, and repeat aloud the narrator, where required. In short, strictly follow the system.

Step 2: Learning words in parallel with the self-study guide

“You don’t learn new words = you don’t learn the language,” we suggest taking it as a given and not feeling any negative emotions about it.

Also, when you know some rules, learning words is quick and effective.

The main tip for learning a language, in the beginning, is to use the Pareto principle and first learn words from the “Gunnemark Minilex”.

Minilex– 400-500 basic words and about 150 expressions, the knowledge of which helps you understand up to 80% of the written and oral speech on simple topics. It was compiled by a Swedish polyglot and author of “The Art of Learning Languages” Eric Gunnemark.

How to learn words

We recommend using the interval repetition method. This is when the algorithm gives out words with different frequencies, based on your previous answers. You can use different applications for this.

How to memorize words

You can use the method of association. This topic (as on any of the items, probably) could be written a separate article, then I’ll try to outline it briefly.

Opponents of this technique usually say that this association takes a long time to recall each time. That’s true, but we only need to remember it the first few times. Then the process will go automatically and the word will be remembered directly.

Step 3: Writing texts (with the self-study)

The standard rule of memory is that you forget everything you don’t use. So learned words and grammar need to be practiced. And at first, it’s better to do it through writing.

Mostly because it’s painless and not stressful 🙂 You can peek at all the rules and write whatever comes to mind. But the most important thing is to submit all of your writing for review.

This is where we recommend using apps that will first write the texts for you and you learn how to do it right. For example, you can use write my essay for me service.

The text should be analyzed and try to remember. And of course, incomprehensible expressions to repeat at least a couple of times a week.

Better – every other day or every day. You will notice the progress very quickly.

Step 4: Practice speaking (nearer to the end of the self-study)

We would advise adding speaking practice when you are comfortable with writing. It’s always stressful, especially the first few times. So this moment is better delayed – until you’re confident writing small texts about your life.

But when that moment arrives, get to the fight right away! 🙂

Step 5. Motivation comes first

The last, but not the least,” as the English say. The advice is last but not least. First, any activity is more effective when you understand the final big goal. When learning a foreign language is a very useful visualization of the final goal, for example, enrollment in a foreign university. The more a person wants to achieve a big goal – the faster and will learn the language.

Secondly, it is important to motivate yourself for achievements in the training program with small personal bonuses. Here begins to work our subconscious, which is known to work wonders. For example, the award can be a trip to the SPA, fishing, buying a long-desired player, or favorite chocolates. The bonus can be anything, as long as it is desirable and enjoyable. It is important to be sure to reward yourself with a bonus when you achieve another goal. Otherwise, the method will stop working, because you can’t fool your subconscious mind!
