5 Tips for Perfecting College Scholarship Essay Submissions

Many scholarships ask applicants to submit at least one essay. Although you might think this is just another paper, it is often the most important part of your application process. What you write and how you get your views across will give the committee a feel for who you are and your commitment to your goals. It’s important to do the best job you can.

The first step would be to go online and use a free search and application platform to find available scholarships and grants. Once you build your profile and get matched with eligible scholarships, it’s time to apply and get your essay ready. This can be a daunting process if this is your first time to write one of these essays. After all, there’s a lot riding on this one document so you don’t want to mess things up by making a silly mistake. Need some advice? Unsure of what you need to cover? The following are some tips for perfecting college scholarship essay submissions.

Answer The Question

Seems like a simple piece of advice, right? Not as simple as it seems. Many students fail to address the question asked and often go off on a tangent that is completely irrelevant. If you don’t know the answer to the question, don’t make up your own question and answer that because it sounds slightly similar. You must properly analyze what the question asks, too. Look at the wording, and do exactly as the question tells you. If it says contrast and compare, this is what you must do. This piece of advice cannot be overemphasized, as it is a mistake that is often made, and could end up being the difference between acceptance and rejection.

Organize Your Ideas

Once you know what the question is asking you to do, start to get your ideas down. Your initial planning is likely to be messy. This is why you are going to have to put them into a more organized format. This will make it easier for you to write your essay as you will know where to go from one point to another. If your essay doesn’t flow well, then it will be hard to read and you won’t be getting your ideas across effectively. Take the extra time to plan properly and you will reap the rewards.

Use the Correct Structure

You have your plan, now you need to structure your essay. First is the introduction where you touch on all of the points you are going to cover. You are not answering the question, rather telling the reader how you are going to answer the question. Once this is done, you have the main body of your essay. This should flow from one idea to another, and remember to keep one idea to one paragraph. Finally, you have your conclusion, which will effectively answer the question in a concise manner. Never put new information into your conclusion that you haven’t discussed in the main body.

Write It

Everything is now planned out. You have your ideas and know how you are going to make your structure rock solid from start to finish. It is best to write the whole essay in one go – this way you are not walking away and losing your train of thought. This can lead to jumbled ideas and your essay may not flow as well. Don’t worry about it being perfect, you should be leaving yourself time to read it over and change mistakes and any structural errors.

Read It Over

A great way to manage stress surrounding essay writing is to leave it for a day and then read it over again. By giving it time, you will be reading it with a fresh mind. Reading it over straight away runs the risk of not being able to pick up on mistakes. It’s also important to remember that while you should be critical, don’t be overly critical. You don’t need to change everything and we often do not value our own work. If you have planned properly and answered the question, you are on the right track.
