5 Habits of Successful Writer

Even the best writers have issues that most of us do: the desire to put off work until later, a lack of motivation, and an idea crisis. The truth is that good writing is the result of quality and long work on yourself and your talent. Writing is something that cannot be learned immediately. You have to write, read, have willpower, and keep a daily routine. Well, or at least keep morning pages and read a book before going to bed every day.

  1. Three morning pages

Julia Cameron once wrote about the morning pages in her book The Artist’s Way. She found morning pages to be a great way to improve your writing skills and boost your brain’s creativity. You can write down whatever you want in this diary starting from the sentence. Describe in your diary small and insignificant things, write down ideas or discuss plans for the future. The whole trick is to write three pages every day, and it doesn’t matter what you write there – the main thing is to write. 

Another exercise is to try to write something for someone else. There are students who often turn to professional writers with the request “Help me write my paper”. This practice shows that when you write for someone new inspiration and ideas come. After all, this way you get a little distracted from your writing, and then you start writing with renewed enthusiasm, inspired by writing for others.

  • Play with words

Solve crosswords, play Scrabble, download the “Create the word” app to your phone. Write every day from small notes, fables, or poems. Learn poetry by heart. Finding a rhyme for any word is also a great practice. Choose your favorite word and come up with 10-15 rhymes for it. All of these activities are great ways to expand your vocabulary and increase your creativity.

  • Challenge yourself

Set yourself a creative challenge every day: write a certain number of words, pages, or characters. For example, Ernest Hemingway wrote 500 words a day. He woke up early in the morning in order to have time to fulfill and create in peace and quiet his work before the scorching heat set in. Hemingway was known for his love of drinking, in the morning he did not allow himself to sit down to write a book while drunk.

And George Sand wrote every day exactly until 11 o’clock, even if she finished her novel at 10:30, she still began to write a new one and worked exactly half an hour.

  • Be unreachable

Smartphones, tablets, computers – all this makes it difficult to focus on more important things. When you write, you should be completely focused on your idea. Make it a habit to go without the Internet one day a week, allow yourself to live a little in the real world.

By the way, that’s how J.K. Rowling came up with the story of Harry Potter. She was on the train and looking out the window when inspiration descended on her. So she came up with the whole story about the wizarding world from start to finish.

  • Pen and paper

The best habit of a writer is to carry pen and paper everywhere and always. Ideas come suddenly, and you have to be ready for them. It doesn’t have to be a huge notebook and a long pen, buy yourself something small that you can quickly open and write down small notes for your future story.

Habits will be effective if they are applied every day. But these habits alone, unfortunately, are not enough. You have to start seeing yourself as a writer, you have to live as a writer, you have to look at the world as a writer. Remember the quote: “Act like you are already happy, and you will really become happier”. The way it is. Act like you are already a famous writer and you will really become one!
