TIP #167   This tip was sent on the week: 13th - 19th Jul, 2008

The Word is Room for Choice

This Tip applies to the following products:

It's a fact that just about any sentence can be translated in more than one way.  Word Magic makes it possible for you to have access to many different ways of translating a given sentence using different styles: some more formal, some more informal and some even with a colloquial tint.

Word Magic has been recognized by the huge and ever-growing number of colloquial expressions contained in its dictionaries.  However, not all our compound-word entries are of the colloquial or idiomatic type.  You will also find a huge number of regular  everyday expressions which are there solely for the purpose of increasing your room for choice, providing the palette with a greater variety of colorful words that facilitate your writing or translation experience.

For instance, let's examine the following sentence:

La conocí más o menos en la época en que tú llegaste.

Default translation, Automatic Mode (Text Translator Standard Version):

I knew her about the time when you arrived

Using Interactive Mode (PRO versions) you can produce the following variations of the initial verb “la conocí” clicking on the alternative entries:

  • I knew her about the time when you arrived
  • I was acquainted with her about the time when you arrived
  • I knew about her about the time when you arrived
  • I met her about the time when you arrived
  • I got acquainted with her about the time when you arrived
  • I acquainted myself with her about the time when you arrived
  • I made acquaintance with her about the time when you arrived

Select your choice “met” and now proceed to examine the rest of the sentence.  Click on “about”

I mether about the time when you arrived

Notice that “about the time when”  is underlined in red. This means that the whole group of 4 words in English and 8 words in Spanish “más o menos en la época en que” correspond to a single translation entry.  Therefore you can look for synonyms of the compound expression, thus:

  • I met her around the time you arrived
  • I met her around the time when you arrived
  • I met her just about the time when you arrived

Finally, you can click on “arrived” and examine other alternatives:

  • I met her just about the time when you arrived
  • I met her just about the time when you came
  • I met her just about the time when you got here
  • I met her just about the time when you got over
  • I met her just about the time when you got there
  • I met her just about the time when you came by

Our philosophy: Let the human translator control the translation process.
