Understanding the Interactive System - Part I

In the past weeks we have discussed to some extent about how to evaluate different translations systems, how to select the best product in accordance with your needs and which other alternative methods are there to Machine Translation (MT)…such as translation memory (TM).

In doing so, we have deviated somewhat from practical aspects. It is time now to get back on track and present some real-life examples to illustrate how the Interactive editing functionality of ESI Professional works.

We have seen how, using the interactive mode, we can choose the correct meaning of a polysemous word (an ambiguous word which has multiple meanings). Then, once we have chosen the meaning (horizontal tags in the Interactive window), we can even choose alternate translations for that meaning.

So, we can choose:

  1. Meanings (horizontal tags) and
  2. Alternate translations (vertical list of synonyms)

What else can we choose?

We have said that we can choose Part of Speech.

How’s that? How can we choose the Part of Speech of a word in a sentence if that is already given in the sentence by a correct grammatical structure?

There are two instances in which we may have to choose an alternative part of speech of a particular word:

  1. When a sentence is grammatically ambiguous and has more than one possible correct interpretation.
  2. When the program has misinterpreted the grammatical structure of a sentence and- as a consequence- has chosen an incorrect Part of Speech for one or more words in that sentence.

An example of a fairly ambiguous construction (item 1) is the following sentence:

Always try to do something for the other fellow and you will be agreeably surprised.

This sentence has two completely different meanings which we will leave for you to analyze until we come back to it next week.
