This tip was sent on the week: 14th - 20th Nov, 2004.
These tips apply to the following programs:
Last week we mentioned that there is a pervading concept inherited from the first years of Machine Translation (MT) that Machine Translation in general does not work. This notion is particularly strong among professional translators.
The typical argument is “It takes me more time to fix and edit the translation made automatically by a computer than to do the whole translation myself!”
We asked one of them, “Have you seriously tried to do the translation using the Interactive Editing Mode of ESI PRO?”
--. “No. I have tried other systems and it always takes more time.”
We understand this attitude because we all have had it to a greater or lesser degree, one way or another, at some time in our lives. It is a kind of easygoing human inertia.
However, we would like to point out here that there are many other professional translators who have given a shot to ESI PRO’s Interactive Mode and they absolutely go for it. Actually, the best testimonials we have come from professional translators claiming that the time saved using Interactive Editing is about 25% to 50%.*
( * When you become proficient in the use of the program, the time saved could actually be much more.)
For reference, just take a look at our Testimonials page.
Next week we will discuss those Interactive ESI features in particular which were designed to expedite the editing process, thus reducing the time and the effort required to finish a translation job.
Here we will mention just one that is evident at first sight and does not require any special icon: By translating interactively you will automatically have all the Spanish words already present and correctly spelled out in your Editing Box, with their diacritical accents and all. This fact alone will save you a lot of typing and spell-checking effort. Even if some words are disarranged (in some of the sentences), it will not require much time to straighten them out. We will explain later how this is done during the Interactive process.
